Setting up Google Analytics to track Adsense click

A few posts back, I learned that Google Analytics can be used to track Adsense clicks. After setting up and running for a few weeks, I ready to report on it.

This article is divided into 2 sections. The first is my notes on setting up the tracking code. The second is reading the Google Analytics report.

Google Analytics - free and good

Google Analytics is by far the most powerful free analytic tool available for doing web analytics.

However the value of this product is constrained by your ability to squeeze valuable information out of it.

It will be as good as some free webstats tools if you just use it for data collection and charting. This already is very powerful if you know how to extract and make sense out of the data.

According to Google, the Google Analytics service “tells you everything you want to know about how your visitors found you and how they interact with your site. You’ll be able to focus your marketing resources on campaigns and initiatives that deliver ROI, and improve your site to convert more visitors.”

Where your visitors are coming from? How long are they staying? Where are they leaving? What keywords are visitors using on Google or Yahoo that lead them to your site?

Google Analytics can help you answer these questions.

How to get a Google Analytics account?

Request an invitation. If you do not have a Google Account, you have to sign up for one too. Nowaday the wait for the invitation isn’t very long. My last request came in less than a week.

Once you have an account, it is very simple to set up. Sign in and take some time to explore. The amount of features does take some time to learn and get used to.

I am learning too and will be sharing more of my experience and tips with Google Analytics.

Using Google Analytics with Google Adsense

You have Adsense. You got your Google Analytis account. What is the next question you would ask?

Can Google Analytics track Adsense performance?

It turns out the answer is Yes!

A quick research showed that this question was asked, solved and solved again since Analytics was releases in November 2005.

All the hard work had been done and all I have to do is to stand on shoulder of giant to see further.

I had just setup the necessary code and Goal in Google Analytics. Let’s wait for the data to flow in before I present any thoughts on it.

As a side thought, would I be violating Adsense term if I present the the Analytic data?

Linking several Google Analytic accounts

Currenly each Google Analytic account is limited to 5 website profiles (Is this restriction across the board?). To track more than 5 sites, you would need to apply for multiple accounts.

You may also have multiple accounts if you are helping friends or clients to manage their analytic data.

With serveral Google Analytic accounts, do you have to sign in and out to different account?

That was what I did until I found a way to link several accounts together.

While you can create only one Google Analytics account per Google Account email login, you can link other Analytics accounts to your own. Once you have been granted Account Administrator access to any other Google Analytics account, those acount profiles will be accessible from the My Analytics Accounts drop-down list, on the right-hand side of the orange navigation bar of every page. Use this list to access any other account on which you have Administrator access.

Here’s how.
